Dog Park Closures
Countryside Dog Park is closed for maintenance and will reopen on July 30, 2018. A temporary dog park has been established and may be used as an alternative. (see map below for the temporary dog park location).
Quail Run Dog Park is closed for maintenance and will reopen on July 30, 2018.
With high usage all year round, it is difficult to find a best time to get work done without impacting someone’s enjoyment at City parks. Many times, that means closing off areas to make sure they meet the high expectations of citizens and visitors, this is the case with our beloved off leash areas.
Mesa’s dog parks at Quail Run and Countryside Parks host more users per sq. ft. than typical parks, and there is a need for increased turf (lawn) maintenance. The amount of use these facilities receive quickly diminishes newly planted grass and we have had to extend these closures. We are hoping that a longer period of growth will allow for deeper rooting, growth of a thicker mat, and will promote grass longevity. As part of this practice, additional efforts after re-opening of the facilities will be implemented to assist in encouraging turf strength before dormancy in the winter.
This strategy is based on our desire to create a better product for patrons throughout the winter months and in recovery when spring arrives. The renovations occurring include: aeration of the soil, fertilizing, planting seed at the base of the basin, installing sod on the slopes, and the addition of ramps at the sidewalk/turf transitions at Quail Run.
We recognize that the temporary off leash area does not have water, as a result, we would like to let everyone know they should pack in water when you visit the dog park.
