The Mesa Historical Museum will re-open the Old Lehi School, at 2345 N. Horne, as the museum’s exhibition space on February 8, 2019 with a new exhibit: Gizmos, Gadgets, and Greatness: Technologies that built Mesa 1877 – 1957. The building, originally opened in 1914, is on the National Historic Register and was part of the Mesa school system until 1977. The Mesa Historical Society, Inc. parent company of the museum, acquired it in 1992. The building is currently being renovated, this includes returning the outside to its original Navajo white color accentuating the look of a Greek Temple in the original architecture. In addition, several of the former classrooms are being returned to use as exhibition spaces, interior walls are being plastered and painted, the exterior landscaping is being cleaned and upgraded, and the replica of the original Adobe School House, built in the late 1990’s, is being renovated for use in living history lessons.

The Grand Re-opening will feature a reception from 6:00 – 9:00 PM on February 8th, for donors and invited guests. Guests will get to preview the new exhibition which highlights artifacts from the museum’s collection of gizmos and gadgets that were used in the development of Mesa from its early pioneer days in the late 19th century, to a modern city with technological infrastructure in the mid-20th century. Executive Director Leon Natker said: “We want to highlight how innovative, creative, and progressive the founders and early residents of Mesa were as they developed this oasis in the desert. We also want to re-introduce the museum and its most valuable artifact, the Old Lehi School, to the community. The Old Lehi School is a community asset which needs to be available to the whole community. It is the museum’s responsibility to care for it.”

The exhibition will be open to the general public from February 9th to June 1st.
