Adaptive sports, recreation and social programs are offered to youth and adults with intellectual disabilities. The City of Mesa Parks, Recreation & Community Facilities offers a wide variety of activities including weekly sports and recreation programs, special interest classes, social activities, and summer camp. Our mission is to “Let no one sit on the sidelines.”
Adaptive Sports & Recreation
Sports and recreation opportunities are available for individuals with intellectual disabilities ages 6 and older residing in or outside of Mesa. The typical program will take place once per week for up to 12 weeks in a season.
The training schedule for each program is based on the competition schedules as determined by Special Olympics Arizona (SOAZ). Athletes have the choice whether or not to compete in the SOAZ competitions. If the athlete will compete in SOAZ competitions, a Medical & Consent Form must be completed by a physical and submitted to the City of Mesa office. The document is valid for three years from the date of the doctor’s and participant’s (or guardian’s) signatures. Athletes without an up-to-date Medical & Consent Form will not be allowed to participate in SOAZ competitions.
This trip is for individuals ages 18 and over with developmental disabilities. The group will travel to California via a chartered air-conditioned bus.
This year’s trip includes transportation, Wednesday & Thursday night hotel, breakfast on Thursday & Friday morning, admission to Disneyland and California Adventure and a great time! Participants will need to bring money for lunch and dinner on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and additional spending money.
Dinner one night will be with Disney characters.
You must be a participant who regularly participates with the City of Chandler Therapeutic or City of Mesa Adaptive Recreation programs to attend this trip. There are 20 spaces for Chandler program participants and 20 for Mesa. Once the 40 slots are filled, a waiting list will be kept for possible vacancies or a second bus.
The Holiday California Vacation is made available to participants at a discounted rate this year through the generous donation of $10,000 from Arizona Disabled Sports and the You look Marvelous Fashion Show.
Participants must be capable of handling their self-help needs (such as showering, dressing, toileting and eating). Due to the nature of the trip and the limited number of available chaperones, all participants must be able to transfer into the bus safely.
Final acceptance on this trip is left to the discretion of the program coordinators. You will receive a receipt confirmation by email when you are accepted.

Adaptive Programs for Individuals with Physical or Visual Disabilities
Adaptive sports and recreation programs for people with physical or visual disabilities ages 6 through adulthood are offered through the community partner, Arizona Disabled Sports.
The City of Mesa strives for inclusion in all activities and programs. Every effort will be made to place participants in their desired activities regardless of physical or intellectual disabilities or special needs.
Please communicate any special needs or medical conditions that might impact participation in selected programs by completing an Inclusion Support Request Form in a timely manner.
